Satopanth Lake Trek

Starts from

The triangular Satopanth lake  is a crystal clear green water body situate at an elevation of 4,600 meters above sea level. Adorned in the midst of snow covered peaks, this high altitude lake has got great religious significance too to the people of Uttarakhand. Apart from this, this mythical glacial lake offers the experience of high altitude trekking, walking on boulders, moraine, glacier and knife edge ridge. It is believed that the Pandava princes from the epic Mahabharata ascended this challenging trail on their way to heaven.

On reaching Badrinath, the day is spent on moderate treks for the purpose of acclimasation including visits to the Badrinath ji temple, walking to the hamlet of Mana, the last Indian village on the Ind0- Tibetan Chinese border, which is 4km away from Badrinath. From there, after a trek of 2 to 3km, appears the Vasudhara Fall when our camp site is. The route then further proceeds on along the Alaknanda river and through the grassland in the middle of the moraine of the Dhanno glacier. Catch the sight beautiful Alpine flowers.A few more kilometers away, one gets to see the Sahastradhara—the ‘ thousand-fold spring’ the site of limestone stalactite monoliths. From here the mighty Mount Neelkanth is visible.

The final stretch of the treks is to Satopanth Tal. This is a trek of around 10 km (5 km one way)  and takes around 8 hours to complete. The jaw-dropping sights of Mount Neelkanth and the towering ridge of Chaukhamba looms over the lake along with the Neelkanth, Balakun, Parvati and other peaks. It is believed that Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Mahesh bathe in the lake on the auspicious days. The final steps towards the summit of the trek is especially steep and the most challenging one as there is nothing beneath the feet except loose moraine soil from the glaciers. One needs to be very careful here. On a clear day one can see clearly the Swargarohini steps from Satopanth Tal, from where, it is said that the Pandavas ascended for  heaven. Way back, the same trail is followed until you reach the Vasudhara campsite.

This typical glacial moraine trail into the core of the Himalayas is indeed a delight for trekkers. This glacier valley is typically low in oxygen and trekkers must get acclimatized after reaching Vasudhara.
